Octavia Butler - Kindred

First published in 1979, the story centres on Dana, a 26-year-old black woman and aspiring writer who is in the process of moving in to live with her white boyfriend in the present day. She then gets sent (“summoned”) back in time (several times) to the pre-civil war Maryland days. It is in this past that she experiences abuse in the life of a black person in the era of slavery. It gets interesting when we understand that the white boy she saves in the past is her distant relative whom she protects at the same time as suffering abuse with the other slaves. Brilliantly told, and still very relevant.
